"On a Friday afternoon, in mid-summer of 2002, after one close friend kept after me to find an illustrator, I said to her, 'When the illustrator walks through my door, that’s when I will get it done.'

Three days later, on Monday afternoon, a young woman named Regina Farrell came to my office. She had been to the main hospital asking about medical services and was mistakenly sent to my office. Not wanting her to feel like she had wasted her time making the 4 block walk, I sat with her and we talked. I asked her where she was from and she said she was here from Ireland, feeling lost  and out of sorts. I asked her what she did for a living and she said that she was an illustrator. I paused for a moment, not knowing what to say. I then told her that I had written a story for children and asked if would she like to read it. I printed out a copy and handed it to her. She asked if she could take it home.

The next day, Regina returned it to me but she also had drawn a picture of all of the animals in the story. Two days later, she was back with a second picture. I asked her if she was telling me that she wanted to illustrate the whole book. She was thrilled to say yes. It took her six months but she finished drawing the whole book. It was a wonderful job."
